The Cannabis Component CBG Shows Promise in Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis With Its ‘Anti-Inflammatory Capacity,’ Study Finds

A lesser known cannabis component known as CBG is being explored as a potential area of interest in research related to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to a new study from Rambam Health Care Campus.

While most conventional RA therapies target certain proteins called cytokines, the study authors described using CBG to directly regulate white blood cells, or neutrophils, that can release certain cytokines linked to inflammation. Researchers determined that “CBG has anti-inflammatory capacity and therapeutic potential in regulating neutrophil-mediated immunity in RA.”

Specifically, cannabigerol was associated with decreases in the cytokine IL-6 by 98 percent. Cytokines IL-6 issues are typically the main reason or one of the main reasons that trigger RA.

CBG, or cannabigerol, is often called the “mother cannabinoid” because other cannabinoids like THC and CBD are derived from its acidic form, CBGA. While it’s found in smaller concentrations in most cannabis plants, CBG has been gaining attention for its potential applications.
