Survey: Many Consumers Substitute Cannabis for Prescription Medications

According to survey findings from the telehealth platform NuggMD, the vast majority of respondents reported consuming cannabis as an alternative to pharmaceutical medications. Of approximately 485 participants surveyed, "more than 79 percent said that they consumed cannabis, at least in part, as an alternative to prescription medications."

A notable finding indicates that most respondents were not enrolled in state-sanctioned medical marijuana programs, despite using cannabis therapeutically. The research aligns with comparable studies showing consumers treat cannabis as a substitute for conventional medicines.

Scientific literature documents declining conventional medication use among cannabis consumers. "Many longitudinal studies report a decline in patients' use of conventional medicines, specifically opioids, anti-anxiety drugs, and sleep aids, following their use of cannabis."

Beyond pharmaceuticals, consumers frequently report replacing cannabis for alcohol, tobacco, and other controlled substances. These trends are consistent with broader shifts in how consumers approach wellness and personal health choices.

As cannabis becomes more accessible across legal markets, surveys like this offer valuable insight into how consumers are integrating it into their lives. Always consult with a healthcare provider before making changes to any prescribed medications.
